The Flaminio obelisk derives its name from the Flaminia road, the second oldest obelisk in Rome.

Originally from Heliopolis the Flaminio obelisk was brought to Rome by Augustus in 10 BC with the Solare obelisk, and erected on the spina of the Circus Maximus. Found with the Lateranense obelisk in 1587, the obelisk was in two pieces and resurrected by Pope Sixtus V in 1589. The embellishments such as sculptures with lion fountains were later added to the base in 1818.
