A historic church on the Aventine hill, is the Mother Church of the Order of Roman Catholic Preachers better known as the Dominicans.
Santa Sabina is perched above the Tiber River to the north and the Circus Maximus to the east. It is located near the small public park Giardino degli Aranci , which has a panoramic terrace overlooking Rome. It is a short distance from the Knights of Malta headquarters.
Santa Sabina is the oldest Roman basilica existing in Rome which preserves its original rectangular colonnaded plan and architectural style. Built by Pietro di Illyria, a Dalmatian priest, between 422 and 432 near a temple of Juno on the Aventine hill in Rome. The church was built on the site of the first imperial houses, one of which would be called della Sabina, a Roman matron originally from Avezzano, in Abruzzo, Italy. Sabina was beheaded under the emperor Vespasian, or perhaps Hadrian, because she had been converted to Christianity by her servant Seraphia, who was stoned to death. Later it was declared a Christian saint.
